Gender roles still have a large impact on development of and success in life for men and women. This book describes and explains the similarities and differences from a social psychological perspective. Up to date research is looked at and the often unconscious influence of gender stereotypes is described. To this end findings on the self-concept, on attitudes of gender roles and areas of social behaviour, as health, choice of career, social relationships and leadership behaviour, are documented.

Prof. Ursula Athenstaed teaches social-psychology at the university of Graz. Prof. Dorothee Alfermann teaches sport psychology at the university of Leipzig.
