If you want to give or understand directions, the essential vocabulary are the words to describe location. Using the following list, insert the correct translations in the text: opposite, beside (next to), between, in front of, behind, near to (nearby), next (nearest), at the end of, on (around) the corner, above, below.

1 Our headquarters are hinter the main train station. It’s a large office block, neben the Hilton Hotel.

2 The nächste taxi rank is just two minutes from here, an der Ecke of the street. It’s right vor Boots the chemist.

Praxistipp

Ein sehr verbreiteter – und schwer wiegender – Fehler von deutschen Muttersprachlern ist, für die Ortsangabe „vor" im Englischen before zu verwenden. Before kann grundsätzlich nur für das zeitliche „vor", wie in I must call Ms Smith before she leaves the office, verwendet werden. Bei Ortsangaben heißt es immer in front of. Genauso falsch ist die wörtliche Übersetzung von „in der Nähe" mit z.B. Is there a café in the near? Diese Redewendung existiert im Englischen nicht! Es muss heißen Is there a café near here (nearby)?
